God is using your “mundane” work to do the miraculous—just like Joseph
Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me….I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you….But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. (Genesis 45:4-5, 7)

Written by Abby Worland, Denver Institute | Have you ever gotten to the end of the day, looked at your to-do list, and realized you may have been more than a little optimistic when you wrote it that morning? Where does the time go? Why is it so hard to actually get things done?

…a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor….Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (John 12:2-3)
Because you’re subscribed to my devotionals, I’m confident you’ve overcome the unbiblical hierarchy that elevates the calling of pastors and missionaries above the work of mere Christians who work as entrepreneurs, accountants, and baristas.

Written by: Dustin Moody at Denver Institute for Faith & Work Something seemed…off. It wasn’t so much that I was dissatisfied where I was; I had a home that I was proud of, a job that was sufficiently enjoyable and professionally challenging, and family and friends that helped to create a community that I loved. But in 2014, I found myself feeling a bit disconnected. Over the previous few years, significant relationships had morphed as friends moved on from central Florida to pursue other goals: being closer to family when their own babies arrived; professional opportunities that required a cross-country move; missions opportunities overseas. Consequently, I found myself dreaming about new adventures. Should I head to Washington, D.C., and fulfill my undergraduate dreams of working in politics? Or maybe a stint in Nashville was in order, as it seemed to be one of the more popular and trendy places in the southeast. As I contemplated a few different options, C.S. Lewis’ quote kept coming to mind: “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” While Lewis was referring to our spiritual “homes,” I had no problem (mis)contextualizing […]

At age 16, Richard Branson was struggling with school and having a difficult time seeing why all the work was worth the effort. So he took matters into his own hands; he dropped out.
No one could have predicted what would come next. That just a few years later, Branson would go on to start Virgin Records, which would become a giant within the music industry. That he would eventually one day be knighted for his contribution to entrepreneurship. That later in the 21st century he would be in the mix with the commercial space tourism race through Virgin Galactic.

At Scatter, we’re equipping you with the tools and resources you need to thrive in the ways God has uniquely designed you to contribute. We want to see you leverage your personality and passion, your talents and training to bring real and lasting impact to the world around you. By 12 years old, movie director and film legend Steven Spielberg was already wowing his childhood friends and family with short, homemade western films. Even as a teenager, he knew that he had found his lane. His joy. His spark. If you were to skim through the opening chapters of most modern biographies, you wouldn’t have to flip far before you found a similar moment of “spark discovery.” There is a point in most people’s lives where whatever gift, talent, or passion that has either been lying latent or has been casually explored suddenly sparks and catches flame. When things suddenly “just sort of clicked.” But what are these sparks? How do you go about finding them, nurturing them into a blazing fire of joy and passion? If you haven’t found that spark yet, don’t be discouraged. There is no timeline that dictates when sparks have to be discovered. Don’t fall […]
Read More5 Key Skills That Help You Stand Out
In this piece, we want to spend some time looking at how to stand out, because there seems to be this underlying tension that we want to live worthwhile lives, but we think that requires the sacrifice of personal ambition or professional success. After all, doesn’t the bible say to aim to live a “hidden,” or a humble life?
